Congratulations to TxPEC Champions
    The Texas Partnership for End-of-life Care (TxPEC) honors a number of TAPM members among those awarded for "Excellence in End-of-Life Care."  And the Gala was a Blast!

Request for Experts to Assist TSBME
    As part of S.B.104, authorization and funding was granted to the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners to create a panel of experts to assist in reviewing Board investigations.

Amendments to the Texas Advance Directives Act
   During the 78th Texas Legislature Regular Session, several amendments were added to the Texas Advance Directives Act.  These are summarized here, with links to some of the important additions and changes.

TAPM 2003 Annual Business Meeting
    TAPM held its annual business meeting on April 4, 2003 immediately after the TexMed 2003 End-of-Life Educational Track.  New officers were elected and plans for the upcoming year were drawn.  For more information click here.

TAPM to Help Accredit CME
    After a pilot project, TAPM is ready to assist its members in accrediting their end-of-life and other palliative presentations for physician Continuing Medical Education.  Through a relationship with the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), TAPM can, for a small fee to defray costs, obtain AAFP Prescribed credit (equivalent to AMA Category 1) for programs designed for and presented to physicians.  For details, click here.

Controlled Substances Face Regulatory Barriers in California
    Regulatory barriers to prescribing Schedule II controlled substances are greater in California than in any other state.  One group of pain specialists, the Southern California Cancer Pain Initiative (SCCPI) -- along with 32 other pain organizations -- is working to eliminate those barriers.  Together, they propose to eliminate triplicate forms and to incorporate the use of an electronic monitoring program for controlled substances.  For the rest of this article from Pain Medicine News Jan/Feb 2003, click here
