New Law Regarding Schedule II Prescribing Takes Effect
    The procedure for prescribing Schedule II medications became easier on September 1st, 2005, thanks to legislative changes allowing pharmacies to accept faxed C-2 prescriptions without having to later forward the original to the pharmacy.  There are more requirements, though, in order to comply with the law.  Please check out the updated Pharmacy Fact Sheet.

HOPE (Hospice Physician Essentials) 2005
    This meeting of hospice and palliative medicine physicians from across Texas is again a success.   TAPM's annual education offering, HOPE, was held October 28th, 2005 in Austin.  As the name implies, the objective of this one-day program is to cover core topics for hospice medical directors, and attendance is limited to physicians only, in order to promote networking and collegiality.  Please click here to view the program flyer.

TxPEC 2005 Annual Meeting and Gala is a success
    The 2005 Annual Meeting and Gala for the Texas Partnership in End-of-life Care (TxPEC) was held at the Omni South Park Hotel in Austin on November 18, 2005.  Successfully offering educational programs that were cosponsored by TAPM, the annual business meeting was well attending. 
    The Annual Gala was held at the TDS Exotic Game Ranch and honored Texas' leading End-of-life Champions.  The 2005 Champions included:
      
 Jim Monahan, MED - President and CEO of Houston Hospice & Palliative Care
     
  Amy Moss, DO, FACOI - Medical Director for Long Term Care for Vitas Innovative Health
       
Alexander Peralta, MD - Medical Director for Universal Health

Nancy Ritts, MSN, RN - Tarrant Area Hospices & TNMHO

TAPM 2005 Annual Meeting
    Important items of business occurred at the Annual Business meeting.
    Several recommendations were made regarding Bylaws revision, including
        Revamping status of certain members (e.g. Fellows)
        Addition of a new committee - Public Policy
        Consideration of revamping Board structure (a Board of Trustees + Officers, instead of just officers) 
    New officers were elected and/or assumed office:
        Leigh Fredholm, MD - President
        Aaron Malakoff, MD - Immediate Past-President
        Linda Tavel, MD - President-Elect
        David Capper, MD - Secretary-Treasurer
        Dennis Pacl, MD - Chair of Membership
        Paula Bessonett, MD - Chair of Education
        Ronald Crossno, MD - Chair of Ethics & Bylaws
        TBD - Chair of Public Policy Committee
    A decision was made to institute paid dues, at $50 / year.
    The current Executive Director, Carla Crossno, was reaffirmed in her position.

Program for TAPM 2005 Annual Meeting
    The TAPM Annual meeting was April 1st - 3rd, in conjunction with the Texas & New Mexico Hospice Organization's Annual Meeting.  TAPM will have its Annual Business Meeting on day two of that meeting. 
    An Advanced Clinical Track will be part of the educational program on April 1st & 2nd, with content geared towards physician attendees.  Click for more information.
