The Texas Academy of Palliative
Medicine (TAPM) is a professional organization of Texas physicians who have a
special interest in palliative medicine. Interested non-physicians may
participate as Associate members.
Palliative care is an
approach which improves the quality of life of patients and their families
facing the problems associated with life-threatening illness, through prevention
and relief of suffering by means of early identification and impeccable
assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychosocial and
spiritual. [World Health Organization: revised May 2002].
Traditionally, palliative care has been
provided by hospices for patients with terminal conditions. However,
palliative concepts are increasingly applied to many different other setting, as
well.
Our Mission
TAPM is organized as a non-profit
501(c)3 corporation to provide support
for medical education and the scientific advancement of palliative medicine to
the benefit of the public interest in the state of Texas.
