Advance Planning and Compassionate Care Act Introduced in Senate
On 8/1, Senator John Rockefeller (D-WV) introduced legislation (S. 2857), to establish uniform regulations governing advance directives and improve the general guidelines for administering end-of-life care. The bill, titled the "Advance Planning and Compassionate Care Act," would direct the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to develop and evaluate new and innovative models of end-of- life care for all Medicare, Medicaid, and State Children's Health Insurance Program SCHIP) beneficiaries. It would also create a 24-hour toll-free hotline to provide consumer information about advance directives and other end-of-life care measures, legally mandate that an advance directive valid in one state will be honored in another state, and establish an end-of-life care advisory board within HHS.
